I was just saying, with your experience—because I actually met John Gray at an event—I know he’s a fun guy, great sense of humor.
Melanie:
He’s fantastic, so much fun to work for. I tell people it was like working for Santa Claus.
Host:
Let’s get into your journey: your studies, then John Gray, Your Tango, and what you do now.
Melanie:
I went to school to be a therapist—bachelor’s, then master’s in counseling psychology. I worked in clinical mental health, started a private practice, but needed extra money. This was the late nineties; therapists weren’t paid well. I answered a newspaper ad: “relationship-minded sales person.” It was teaching singles how to date using John Gray’s Mars and Venus on a Date book. Apparently I talked to more singles than anyone else in the organization, which led to a job offer a couple of years later. John needed someone to develop an online coaching program and run his websites—no experience, total on-the-job training. I wrote articles, learned WordPress, built a membership site selling articles for $9.95 a month—before Substack existed. Did that until 2008.
Your Tango was a print magazine in New York City moving digital; they hired me to run their newsletter. I ended up running their “Experts Division,” coaching therapists and coaches on digital marketing. Over ten years I worked with thousands of helping professionals. In 2021 I started CronesFill Media; now I have a team and we do full-service digital marketing for helpers and healers.

You mentioned psychology—lots of people study one thing and feel stuck. How do you get them out of that?
Melanie:
Look at AI—everything’s changing overnight. This morning I spent three hours updating an article that used to perform well. You have to iterate. Rigidity kills you. When something stops working, figure out how to make it work again. That ingenuity keeps you in business and attractive to clients. People hire those ahead of them, not peers. Resilience is a skill you can practice: try small experiments, write an article two ways, build two landing pages, don’t fear failure.

Platforms like Google, YouTube, TikTok can just yank your content. How do we navigate that?
Melanie:
In mental-health or “your-money-your-life” niches, Google flags you harder. Cite every source. Build a robust “About” page listing degrees, certifications, LinkedIn history. Five-star reviews give a buffer. No platform has this right; they’re all making the same error. AI may eventually give fairer flag-and-review processes, but budgets are tight.

Are newsletters still worth it?
Melanie:
Everything’s moving to omni-present SEO: be on every platform, but niche-down. Newsletters work if the list is curated—super-fans who love your exact topic. Broad lists don’t convert. Segment: crypto people get crypto content, meditation people get meditation content. People pay for unique data or insight they can’t find free.
Host:
I’ve started separating my channels; engagement went up because each audience gets only what it wants.
Melanie:
Exactly. Same with surgeons listening to communication podcasts—concentric circles grow your reach.
Host:
Substack—good or bad?
Melanie:
Huge believer in owning your website—Google and AI can’t index paid walls. Substack works only if you offer original, must-have content. Otherwise, put everything on your open website so search and AI can find it.
Host:
How can podcasters use AI today?
Melanie:
Transcribe the episode (cheap tools exist).
Feed the transcript to ChatGPT and ask: “What questions does this answer that people actually Google?”
Use keyword tools (Ahrefs, SEMrush, Moz) to see volume/competition.
Turn those into blog posts; publish on your open site.
Repeat—every post is fresh food for AI engines.
Be the brand at the finish line when someone finishes their 20-question chat and asks, “Who do I hire?”

Can AI tell us the “new” SEO trick after each algorithm update?
Melanie:
AI gives partial answers. It can’t tell keyword volume/competition without paid tools. Professionals combine data from social, search, analytics—layers you may miss solo. But yes, ask AI: “My average listen time is 12 min on crypto episodes—what content should I make more of?” It’ll give ideas, but you must measure.

Engagement—thumbs-up vs. real listen?
Melanie:
Algorithms value time-on-page/listen. A heart from someone who watched 30 seconds is worth less than one who stayed 12 minutes. PodMatch’s “must listen before pitching” rule helps everyone. Always mention something specific from the episode when you pitch—proof you listened.

Melanie:
SEO, content creation, full website builds/refreshes, ongoing marketing. We teach clients to manage their own sites or do it for them—whatever lets them stay in their zone of genius.

People freeze when they need to update their own site—tips?
Melanie:
Everybody is capable. Record a Loom video teaching them once, or we just handle updates. Avoid Fiverr gigs that disappear—ongoing relationship matters.
